Entrepreneurs who want to take over a webshop are mainly looking for small webshops. Almost 90% of the buyers are looking for a webshop up to 250,000 euros, 60% of the acquirers do not even want to spend more than 50,000 euros.
This is one of the main outcomes of the research the takeover market for web shops by takeover platform Brookz. The purpose of this research is to find out why entrepreneurs want to take over a webshop, which aspects they pay attention to when evaluating and why they want to buy a webshop instead of starting one themselves. 270 SME entrepreneurs participated in the survey.
Relatively low price tag
Of the entrepreneurs who are in the market to buy a webshop, the vast majority of buyers (87%) are looking for a webshop with a price tag of up to 250,000 euros. Almost two-thirds of all entrepreneurs (60%) are even looking for an e-commerce business under 50,000 euros. Only 13% of all entrepreneurs are looking for a webshop with an acquisition price over 500,000 euros
Turnover guarantee
The most important reason for taking over a webshop - rather than starting one yourself - is the fact that a webshop that has been taken over generates revenue at the same time, and thus income in most cases. In addition, for 40% of the entrepreneurs, taking over a webshop is cheaper than starting one themselves.
Annual turnover, sector and visitors crucial
Most buyers pay attention to the annual turnover (73%), the sector in which the shop is active (67%) and the number of visitors (60%). It is striking that only one third of the buyers pay attention to the search engine positions of the webshop and four in ten buyers look at the online reviews of the webshops.
Valuation greatest challenge
The biggest challenge in the takeover is mentioned as the valuation of the webshop to be taken over (56%) next to the current uncertain economic climate (37%) and financing. In contrast, the number of web shops to take over is not a problem. Only 7% of entrepreneurs see this as a challenge.
Takeover opportunities
Peter Rikhof, Brookz editor-in-chief, agrees that the supply of web shops is not a problem at the moment. Rikhof: "The number of webshops on Brookz has increased more than fivefold in three years. Anyone can start a webshop today. But to turn it into a serious business, that just takes serious time and money. Most starting entrepreneurs don't have that long breath. On the other hand, that means acquisition opportunities for webshop entrepreneurs who want to grow via a buy-and-build strategy.'
