You want to sell your shipbuilding company? Then it is good to know what the takeover market in the field of shipping construction companies looks like. The Netherlands has an excellent reputation when it comes to shipbuilding. But this sector is also suffering from personnel shortages, resource constraints and sustainability trends.
The number of mergers and acquisitions in the shipbuilding industry is low and has been stable for years.
There are many ways to value a business. A common method of expressing the value of a business is "a factor x gross annual profit." This factor is also called multiple and another designation for gross annual profit is EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest Taxes Depreciation and Amortization).
In manufacturing & production, the sector to which shipbuilding companies belong, an indicative EBITDA multiple range of 4.6 to 5.5 is currently in place, according to the Brookz Takeover Barometer. The average EBITDA multiple across all SME sectors is 4.90.
The valuation of a business is often the starting point for negotiations between buyer and seller. The outcome of these negotiations is the final sales price. So valuation and price are two different quantities. Besides valuation, the price is also determined by possible scarcity in the market, bargaining power of the parties, the strategic value of the business for the buyer and possible synergy effects for the buyer (cost savings, purchasing advantages).

A number of trends and developments will inevitably cause changes over the next few years, but also offer the shipbuilding industry many growth and acquisition opportunities:
Sustainability is a challenge in all sectors, and for shipping, this means saving at least 70% in CO2 emissions compared to 2008. This sustainability must be implemented throughout the supply chain if this goal is to be achieved at all. From sustainable raw materials, local production and new production methods, the shipping industry is escaping a major sustainability drive.
Lead times for shipbuilding projects are getting out of hand due to the situation in the commodity market of wood, metal and plastic. As a result, shipbuilders are in a split between taking on new projects or not. Making binding offers, at least for now, is a luxury not found in any market.
Worldwide, there is no shipyard in the world that can match Dutch craftsmanship. And that is exactly where the shoe pinches now. With increasing personnel shortages, it is extremely difficult to get qualified personnel. In-house training or automation where possible should solve this problem in the short term.
