Sector information

The Wholesale Trade sector is a broad sector in which human and machine labor is focused on processing, preparing, making and trading products. The Netherlands is traditionally a trading country. Many goods enter the Netherlands at the port of Rotterdam and are then transported by truck or train to their destination. The sector has a wide range of businesses, including:

  • Wholesalers in fuels, ores, metals and chemical products
  • Wholesalers in wood, flat glass, sanitary and building materials
  • Wholesalers in machinery, technical supplies, ships and aircraft
  • Wholesalers in furniture, household goods and hardware
  • Wholesalers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods
  • Wholesalers in food, beverages and tobacco
  • Wholesalers specialized in other goods
  • Non-specialized wholesalers

Takeover market

Buying and selling wholesalers is a lively market, but it largely takes place behind the scenes. On average, the sector represents about ten percent of the total number of mergers and acquisitions in the Netherlands.

Value development

Every party active in the takeover market wants to know the value of a company. With the Brookz Takeover Barometer we gauge the so-called multiples every six months . Looking at the past five years, the multiple for the Wholesale sector is always slightly higher than for SME as a whole.
