Medtech for intestinal wound healing

The company is a medtech startup that originated at a Dutch academic hospital. It is developing a solution to aid in the healing of the intestines following colorectal surgery, typically after the removal of a tumor.

Problem and Solution
The current wound-healing method results in complications—specifically, suture leakage—in approximately 10% of cases. The company expects its solution to reduce suture leakage to a maximum of 4%. This has potentially significant benefits for the patient’s quality of life, as well as for the hospital, which will not have to bear the additional costs of a complication (up to €100,000) itself.

Clinical Progress
The solution has been tested in 12 pigs, with no suture leaks. A First-in-Human study is currently underway at a Dutch hospital, in which 2 patients have already been successfully treated.

Opportunities and Next Steps
Next steps include two additional clinical trials (international, multicenter) and further development toward a market-ready product. The company aims to enter the market by the end of 2028, following CE and FDA approval.
