Alliander acquires TReNT of Enschede.

Description

Network operator Alliander has acquired TReNT (Twinning Research Network Twente) from Enschede with effect from 8 January 2020.

The acquisition of TReNT will give Alliander access to its own telecom infrastructure in the eastern Netherlands. During the acquisition process, Alliander was assisted by Factor & Ros.

Alliander, with a total of more than 7,000 employees, develops and manages energy networks in the Netherlands. For Alliander, telecommunication is essential for the safe operation of its vital infrastructure: the electricity and gas networks. The acquisition fits in with Alliander's policy of owning telecom infrastructure. This is already the case in a large part of Liander's service area. This will now also be the case in the eastern Netherlands. Alliander's major shareholders are the provinces of Gelderland, Friesland and North Holland.

TReNT is a provider of dark fiber, an unlit fiber connection. TReNT has a fiber network of more than 1,900 km throughout the eastern Netherlands. About 650 customers are connected to this network with more than 2,000 connections. TReNT's fiber network complements that of Alliander.

Alliander's acquisition of TReNT ensures the long-term availability of a secure public network. Moreover, the acquisition of the fiber network will make Alliander less dependent on third-party fiber leases in this region. The activities and the name TReNT will be continued from Enschede. TReNT's good service to its customers will be continued.

Factor & Ros acted as adviser to buyer Alliander throughout the acquisition process.
