On Monday, Jan. 30, Veolia Netherlands acquired the processor of organic waste and residual products, Recyfood. With the acquisition of Recyfood, Veolia strengthens its position in the circular economy and expands its activities in the Netherlands to include food and organic waste recycling.
Recyfood was founded seventy years ago in Hillegom and grew into a food recycling company with branches in Hillegom, Putten and Belgium. The Belgian branch was sold in 2021. Recyfood specializes in processing and destroying packaged as well as unpackaged food products, which are no longer fit for consumption. By mixing these, they are suitable for delivery to fermentation plants. This is where biogas is eventually extracted from them, which is used as a replacement for natural gas, for example.
The acquisition of Recyfood accelerates Veolia's Dutch services in the food sector. Transforming organic waste streams into green energy through fermentation is in line with Veolia Group's sustainability goals and contributes to further reducing waste streams. Recyfood ensures that many tons of food products not suitable for consumption no longer end up in landfills or incinerators, but are reused in a useful way.
Recyfood has 11 employees and will continue to operate under this company name for the time being. The acquisition also gives Recyfood the financial resources and know-how of Veolia Netherlands to continue investing in the further growth and sustainability of Recyfood. Some of the packaging is already recycled now, but maximizing this further is high on the agenda. This will allow us to reduce CO2 emissions even further and get a grip on the entire recycling process.
